Fundamentals of Art (Art 1 - Part 1)
Prerequisites: None
Grades: 9-12
Length: Semester

This is an introductory course through which students learn the use of tools and techniques and develop attitudes necessary for understanding the fine arts. Attention is focused on elements of art and several basic principles of design in a broad range of media. There are also illustrated history and analysis lectures.

Ceramics and Crafts (Art 1 - Part 2)
Prerequisites: Frundamentals of Art
Grades: 9-12
Length: Semester

This course will begin with basic experiences in three-dimensional form. The course will also include the basic techniques and understanding of clay as an art medium. The students will gain experiences in coil, slab, and other hand-building techniques. They will also learn glazing and firing techniques of stoneware. Students will also experiment with a variety of other arts including basket-making, plaster work, and printmaking.

Drawing and Painting (Art 2 - Part 1)
Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Art
Grades: 10-12
Length: Semester

Students will learn to draw still life, landscape, and figure. They will learn to become sensitive to observation of line, perspective, volume, detail composition, and the relationship of individual elements. Students apply color and design theory to expressive communication. Subjects for paintings include still life, landscape, figure, and abstraction. The course includes the study of standards for evaluating paintings.

Sculpture/Studio Art (Art 2 - Part 2)
Prerequisites: Ceramics and Crafts, Drawing and Painting
Grades: 10-12
Length: Semester

This course is a basic study of additive and subtractive methods of creating three-dimensional forms. Students work with wire, clay, plaster, and other materials to create pieces which reflect proficiency with the materials and understanding of aesthetics.

Independent Art Study
Prerequisites: Art 1, Art 2, Department Approval
Grades: 11-12
Length: Semester

This is an advanced course for students who have shown some skill and/or interest in one area of art. Students select their own projects and media, and develop contracts that are approved by the instructor.

Drama
Prerequisites: None
Grades: 10-12
Length: Semester

Drama is a semester class offering a variety of learning and application opportunities. In this class, students learn about the history of drama and theatre, technical set, sound, and lighting procedures, as well as acting styles and techniques. The class combines general lectures with practical applications of skills learned. Service hours in the form of assistance with the school’s play and musical are also required.

Concert Choir
Prerequisites: Voice Placement Audition
Grades: 9-12
Length: Semester or Full Year

Concert Choir is a vocal chorale group interested in improving their singing skills and in performing. Emphasis is on developing musicianship, sight-singing skills, and vocal ability. Vocal students sing each semester for placement and grading. The students learn and perform a variety of choral styles which are both sacred and secular, with emphasis on sacred music. Students are strongly encouraged to study voice privately outside of the class. Piano students are needed for daily rehearsals and to accompany the choir in performance.

The Concert Choir actively performs throughout the year. Performances include Fall, Christmas, and Spring concerts, Lutheran Fine Arts Festival, spring tour, worship services, IHSA contests, and athletic events.

Wind Ensemble - Concert Band
Prerequisites: English 10, Department Approval
Grades: 11
Length: Full Year

The Wind Ensemble is open to students with experience in instrumental music. This class is designed to develop ensemble and individual musicianship through the preparation and performance of quality symphonic band and wind ensemble literature. This literature is both secular and sacred, with emphasis on secular music. Students are strongly encouraged to study privately on their instrument outside of the class.

The Wind Ensemble actively performs throughout the year. Performances include Fall, Christmas, and Spring concerts, Lutheran Fine Arts Festival, spring tour, worship services, IHSA contests, and athletic events.

Special Materials: Well maintained musical instrumental of intermediate or higher level and appropriate accessories for their instrument.
